466 Solar LED road studs in nightly Amsterdam.

The Amsterdam Oostelijke Handelskade has a long tradition in trading. Currently this area is being developed for housing, new infra structure & office buildings. Once finished it will be the new promenade for Amsterdam, along the water Y. Building corporation Ymere icw with Amsterdam’s Fonds voor de Kunst, asked us to design a ‘moving image platform’ for this new to be build promenade. The result is LEDwork.

Solar Powered Public Dance Floor

The work has attrackted numerous art directors and film makers as backdrop for recording video clips and movie scenes.

Utility Transformed to Experience

LEDwork is a field of 466 LED units embedded in a floor of 400m2, situated directly along the promenade.

The LED's are stand alone, Solar powered, originating from Japan's motorways. Sensors in the units activate the LED's - which flicker at a frequency of 14psec - after sundown. The field resembles mostly the shimmer of sun on water.
